what is your shape?

Picture
In our church we don’t have a ministry that is made up of just a few extraordinary Christians. We don’t’ have a ministry made of the few. In our church we have an Every-member ministry. The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ … Now the body is not made up of one part but of many … Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." (1 Corinthians 12:12-27)

The church is the body of Christ. Every Christian is a member of that body with a distinctive contribution to make to the life of the body. And the Lord has structured the church like a body composed of different and varied members. It is this variety that enables our physical body and the body of Christ to function effectively.

Within the church the members are different. This is God's design and purpose. Furthermore, it is God's prerogative to give us a particular gift or gifts, therefore there should be no jealously among the members for the differences are of God's creating.

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. (Romans 12:4-8)

S.H.A.P.E. is an acronym for five characteristics that help to determine God’s unique purpose for your life. The five characteristics are Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experience. The better an individual understands each of these characteristics, the better he or she is able to discern their place in the Body of Christ.

Spiritual gifts

Spiritual gifts are tools given by God for doing the work of the ministry. Different people are given different gifts to handle different tasks. Thus, if God gives you a hammer, He wants you to drive nails, not cut boards. If He wanted you to cut boards, He would have given you a saw rather than a hammer. Understanding your gift in light of this principle will enable you to make decisions as to where to serve God, how to serve God, and in many cases, help you choose your occupation. But in all cases it will help you set priorities for your life.

Below you can download a spiritual gifts survey which can be helpful in determining your God-given gifts. There is also a list of all the service gifts that are in the survey.

heart

Another word for heart is passion. There are certain subjects that you feel passionate about and others that you couldn’t care less about. God had a purpose in giving you your inborn interests. Your emotional heartbeat reveals a very important key to understanding his intentions for your life. Don’t ignore your natural interests. People rarely excel at tasks they don’t enjoy doing. High achievers enjoy what they do.

Below is a passion assessment that will help you identify some of the passions you have from God.

Abilities

These are the natural talents that you were born with. Some people have a natural ability with words—they came out of the womb talking! Others are naturally good with numbers. They think mathematically and they can’t understand why you don’t understand calculus.

Bellow is an abilities assessment that will strive to help you understand some of your natural abilities that can be used in serving God.

personality

It’s obvious that God has not used a cookie cutter to create people. He made introverts and extroverts. He made people who love routine and those who love variety. Some people work best when given an individual assignment while others work better with a team. There is no “right” or “wrong” temperament for ministry. Your personality will affect how and where you use your spiritual gifts and abilities. For instance, two people may have the same gift of evangelism, but if one is introverted and the other is extroverted, that gift will be expressed in different ways.

Below is a personality test which differentiates between the four primary personality types.

experiences

Our experiences shape how we view the world around us and how we learn to successfully navigate our experiences, both positive and negative, have a significant impact in our walk with God. Take a moment and evaluate your own experiences and consider how God might use your experiences in serving others.
